Orthotics
Why do I need orthotics?
Orthotics are specialized shoe inserts designed to change your foot function or protect injuries, or a combination of the two. Your dedicated podiatrist may recommend orthotics if you have:
- Diabetic foot wounds
- Plantar fasciitis
- Stress fractures
- Overpronation
- Sports injuries
- Hammertoes
- Neuromas
- Flat feet
- Bunions
- Arthritis
- Bursitis
Orthotics give you just the right amount of support and control to relieve pain and discomfort, while realigning your entire body.
Which type of orthotics do I need?
At FootCare Specialists, Inc., you have access to a variety of orthotic devices that can be customized to your feet and your specific diagnosis. Below are descriptions of some of the most common types of orthotics available at the practice.
Rigid orthotics
Rigid orthotics, made of a firm plastic or carbon fiber material, can control function if you have an injury or chronic condition. They can help eliminate strains, aches, and pains from your feet all the way up to your lower back.
Soft orthotics
Soft orthotics are beneficial for absorbing shock, improving balance, and taking pressure off wounds or sore spots. These orthotics, made from soft, cushioning materials, are ideal for people with diabetes, as well as men and women who have arthritis or foot deformities.
Semi-rigid orthotics
You may need semi-rigid orthotics to provide optimal balance for walking or participating in sports, as well as to relieve pain. These orthotics are even beneficial for children to treat flat feet and in-toeing or out-toeing disorders.
At FootCare Specialists, Inc., orthotics are fabricated in a specialized podiatric lab based on data from an in-office plaster mold or digital image of your feet.
How long does it take to get custom orthotics?
After Dr. Kaplan evaluates you and completes your foot molds, he sends your information off to the lab. In most cases, it takes just a couple of weeks to complete your custom set of orthotics.
Once your orthotics arrive in the office at FootCare Specialists, Inc., you’re scheduled for a follow-up visit. This allows Dr. Kaplan to observe you walking and standing in your shoes with your new orthotics to ensure they’re providing just the right support.
